Episode 27:
AI Translator in Your Pocket

Wed Dec 24th

Hey friends,

This is a special holiday episode — and the last one of the year. And if you read to the end, I have a VERY special gift just for you.

If you’re travelling over the break (or know someone who is), this one’s for you.

During my recent trip to Japan, I found myself pointing my phone at everything: train maps, ingredient labels, shop signs. LITERALLY everything.

I even used it to chat with locals and ask for recommendations.

The app that made this possible wasn’t a fancy new gadget.

You’ve probably already heard of it:

It was Google Translate.

Google just rolled out a 2025 update to its Translate app, that most people don’t even know.. (but that’s why you subscribed, to be ahead 😉).

It combines instant camera translation with AI‑powered live conversations.

I used it more than any other app while travelling (aside from OpenAI Voice Mode) and came away VERY impressed.

In a few days, I’m heading to Vietnam and Google Translate is coming with me.

After how much it helped me in Japan, I’m planning to use it for everything: street food menus, conversations, and navigating local transport.

If it works half as well as it did in Tokyo, I’ll be set.

Today I’ll share what’s new, how I used it on my trips, and why you should install it as we near the holiday season.

📚 What’s New in Google Translate 2025?

  • Gemini-powered text translation: Now understands idioms, slang and context
  • Live conversation mode: Back-and-forth translation in 70+ languages with voice and on-screen text
  • Instant camera translation: Point at any sign, menu or label and see the translation overlaid instantly (this is a GEM)
  • Language practice mode: Customised listening and speaking sessions to build confidence

These updates use Gemini models and advanced voice and speech recognition to deliver clearer, quicker translations.

⚡️ How I Used It in Japan (and Why It’s Different)

✅ Reading signs and menus

In Tokyo I was constantly pointing my camera at vending machines, train schedules and restaurant menus.

The live camera translation replaced the Japanese characters with English text almost instantly.

It even handled tricky ingredients and spice levels 🌶️

No more guessing what I was about to eat.

✅ Talking to locals

I used Live Translate to chat with shopkeepers and ask for directions.

We each spoke in our own language and the app voiced the translation for us 💬

It felt surprisingly natural thanks to the AI handling pauses and accents.

There were a few awkward delays, but overall it beat not being able to communicate at all

✅ Checking ingredients

Japan has strict labelling laws, but it’s all written in Japanese.

I used the camera to scan packaging and quickly see if products contained pork or ham.

The app was WAY faster than searching for a translation manually

✅ Offline help

Some areas had bad signal (Mount Fuji for example)

Google Translate’s offline language packs meant I could still translate text and use conversation mode without data.

Instead of worrying about miscommunication, I focused on enjoying one of Japan’s most iconic attractions.

🔧 How to Get Started (4 Steps)

  1. Update the app: Ensure you’re running the latest Google Translate on Android or iOS
  2. Try Live translate: Open the app, tap Live translate, select the two languages, and start speaking
  3. Use your camera: Tap the camera icon, point at text and watch as the translation appears on top of the image

Pro tip: Before your trip, download offline language packs for your destination. You’ll still be able to translate even without Wi-Fi or mobile data!

📊 Why This Matters Right Now

AI isn’t just for chatbots.

It’s showing up in the tools we already use to bridge real‑world gaps.

Google Translate’s new features let you have back‑and‑forth conversations in more than 70 languages and instantly translate text with your camera

For travellers, remote workers or anyone living in a multilingual city, that’s a big deal.

It means more confidence when asking for help ordering food, or making new friends.

And as the AI models get better, these translations will only become smoother and more accurate.

🤝 Final Thoughts

Google Translate 2025 quietly raised the bar for travel apps.

It moved beyond static text translation and became your AI-powered translation assistant.

If you’re planning a trip, working with international teams or just curious about other languages, give it a try.

I’m still amazed at how much easier it made my time in Japan!

This is my last episode of the year and I wanted to end it with something genuinely useful for anyone travelling.

Whether you’re heading to Vietnam like me, visiting family overseas, or exploring somewhere new, Google Translate’s 2025 update is the kind of AI that just works.

Thank you for being part of this journey in 2025.

Every read, reply and forward means more than you know.

See you in the new year with even more practical AI tips.

If you found this issue useful, please forward it to someone who’s planning to travel soon.

Every share helps this community grow.
